Finally after two long years, I’ve stepped down from my role in the Film Society as President and previously Vice-President. It’s a great sigh of relief, and a huge burden off my shoulders I must say, especially when I became a rather reluctant President last year. However, the journey was quite an enlightening one, albeit not exactly a rewarding one.

I’m no stranger to leadership positions. Through serendipity and sheer random luck, I’ve always found myself an unwitting or unwilling leader. Back in secondary school, I became president of the now defunct Art&Tech club, a feat few knew about or even believed, simply because I happened to be there when there were few. And it’s a theme that runs through my life. I always find myself in clubs or societies that are new, or have few in numbers, and I inevitably end up having to take charge.

Happy Teacher’s Day

Today is Teacher’s Day, and can you believe it, two of my kids actually wished me! One wished me in person yesterday, and one sms-ed me today. I can’t decide whether to feel old or honoured.

That said, being a tuition teacher is a kinda conflicting job. Especially now that all my students have changed from super-intelligent top school kids to your average neighbourhood student. Being a tuition teacher, you don’t always get the credit. And you have to put up with students who have little interest in their work, but are sitting with you because mommy and daddy says so. For some of these kids, I have to play counsellor and motivator too, which I’m really not too good at.
